Frequently Asked Questions
What is ZERO4EVER?
ZERO4EVER is a reference boat to enable the development of an electric propulsion marine industry in Gold Coast. Within this reference boat will be technology from Bosch of Germany and Safiery for the high density 400V Solid State Lithium battery.
What are the key differences for the user between this electric boat and one with an outboard motor?
No Noise: guests sitting in the rear can admire the wake and chat easily without the noise. No Fuel Costs if charging from solar. A very clean rear swim platform. Electric BBQ and power outlet for espresso machine. Add fridge, hot water and waterless toilet. All of these will typically use 1-2% battery capacity with heavy use for a party of 5 people.
What range of travel do ZERO4EVER boats have without fuel?
We are targeting a range of 100 nautical miles (nm). The distance from Gold Coast Southport to Tangalooma on Moreton Island is approximately 42 nautical miles. We expect to be able to travel to Tangalooma and return comfortably.
The boat can be re-charged on a dock at 16A shore power per battery set. Ideally if the dock is on a canal and the home has solar, then the charging will only occur wen there is excess solar power available.
Are electric boats as powerful as conventional fuel-powered boats?
ZERO4EVER will have a 120kW shaft drive. It is close to a 175hp outboard but has more torque to get up on the plane faster. It also has a unique ability to stop easily using regenerative braking.
What if the battery fails?
A unique feature of ZERO4EVER is the dual battery propulsion system. There is complete redundancy with two battery trains that automatically change over for extended range. At any time, should difficulty occur with one battery train, simply cut over to the other.
What is battery Life?
Each battery train consists of 6 modules at approx 60V and weighing 44 kgs. Each module has its own Battery Management System (BMS) for added safety. Modules can be replaced individually. The 60V limit per battery keeps these safe in the extra low voltage category.
The warranty on the battery is 5 years.
The expect cycle life of the battery is 1500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. One cycle is most probably one day on a weekend of use. If using for 50 weekend days a year, thats a 30 year cycle life. Your kids will inherit the battery.
Are ZERO4EVER boats more expensive than traditional boats?
Yes expect to pay around $250,000 for the reference boat if it was for sale. The ICE comparison is around $210,000. However, add fuel and maintenance to the ICE boat. Plus ZERO4EVER is loaded with electric power appliances that are difficult to include in an ICE boat.
Can ZERO4EVER boats handle rough waters?
Yes most definitely.
How quiet are ZERO4EVER boats compared to traditional boats?
You can hardly hear yourself with a large outboard roaring at the rear. By contrast, have a normal conversation in ZERO4EVER.
How long does it take to recharge a ZERO4EVER boat?
On a single 16A outlet, about 32 hours from a low of 20% state of charge to full. With solar power that’s about 5 hours a day in good weather.
Can I charge my boat at any dock?
Yes
What are the maintenance requirements for ZERO4EVER boats?
Virtually no maintenance on the electric battery and propulsion system. Anti-fouling the bottom and cleaning is all that is required annually.
Where can I buy a ZERO4EVER boat?
Not available yet until the reference boat has accomplished its data gathering and Gold Coast boat builders are available.
Can I take a test ride before purchasing a ZERO4EVER boat?
Yes – stay in touch, coming to our opening event.
Are there government incentives for buying electric boats?
None yet, but we are working on it.
What safety features do ZERO4EVER boats offer?
All the safety features required by regulation plus 24/7 waterside assistance.
